A Great Aunt and Historical Site Neighbor

by Bryon Campbell

In the year 2000 I interviewed my father, William Thomas Campbell, Sr., for a research paper for my North Carolina  History Class in college. In that interview, my father informed me that he provided information to the North Carolina Archives and History to prove where Governor Cameron Morrison was born and the information was confirmed to be correct.

Governor Cameron Morrison was the North Carolina Governor from 1921 to 1925 and the first NC Governor after women had the right to vote. Governor Morrison was born October 5, 1869 and died August 20, 1953. Morrison was born and grew up in Richmond County North Carolina. The place was about six and a half miles south of Rockingham, NC on Sandhill Road on the right before you turn left on Loch Haven Rd., Rockingham. On the map it shows where the Morrison's grand parents and parents lived. The map also shows the Campbell Estate.

On the right  before  Loch Haven Rd. is a white house and pond were my Great Aunt Janie Isabelle Campbell (Janie Belle) was born and still lives today. My uncles, Howard F. Campbell and Stancil Campbell, and I, Bryon Reid Campbell,  also own homes next to my Great Aunt Janie Belle Campbell's place. My uncles and I are listed as Richmond County Century Farm Families in North Carolina. Other Richmond County Century Farm Families are:

John Dockery, Emily Dockery (1843)
Ray Gibson (1883)
Robert S. Gibson (1883)
Mildred M. Laton (1818)
David Leroy McKay Sr. (1834)
Marie McQueen
Ruth Watson
Tom H. Williams (1893)
Wesley Kellam Williams (1893)
NCDA&CS Public Affairs Division, Brian Long, Director.

My Great Aunt Janie Isabelle Campbell is the last survivor of her generation on my father's side of the family. On July 11, 2015 there was party at Pleasant Grove Church for her 90th birthday. She was born July 7, 1925. After her party at the church there was also a ice cream party at her house. It is wonderful to have such a special great aunt living next door. Since I was just old enough to walk at least once a year Janie Belle gave me the same exclusive advice.

Along with the map photo there are photos when Janie Belle was young, on the porch with mother and sibling, on the same porch at the ice cream party, group photo at church party and her with her 90th birthday cake. Janie Belle's mother, father and siblings are as follows:
