Theo Smith and Buddies

written by Ken Smith

Mom was short and had calves that looked like a football player due to all the marching, and she was the band director for many years at RHS, RJHS, and L. J. Bell Elementary. Mom also did a stint as Principal and teacher and Roberdel Elementary, started a little band there, and then came back and taught eighth grade at RJHS, Room 8-E directly above Miss Howell's room, where she retired. And, I'm afraid you're correct, she didn't take junk off anybody, and was the "Come-Back Queen" of all time. Mrs. Ellwanger was her best friend and she lived on Ann Street, too, directly across the street from Lib Terry, Anne Terry's mom who taught kindergarten in her basement. Mary Louise was the Dietitian at L. J. Bell Elementary for as long as I can remember. They really had good food there. I can remember leaving the high school during lunch period with buddies and sneaking down to L. J. Bell on Thursdays when I was in the eighth grade. Thursday was the day Mrs. Ellwanger had the cooks prepare homemade vegetable soup (which was made from scratch with the vegetables and beef that was extra from Monday-Wednesday lunches) and cornbread. I always went to Bertha, my favorite cook, because she would go to the back and get me and and my buddy a bigger bowl and fill it all the way to the top! GOOD STUFF - YUM YUM! School cafeterias aren't that way today. To this day, I've never had better homemade vegetable soup and cornbread - ANYWHERE!!! Mrs. Ellwanger would always make us buy a carton of milk, drink it and bring the carton back to her before we threw it in the trash so she could see that we actually finished drinking it or we would not allowed to go to the cooler and buy a NUTTY BUDDY or an ICE CREAM 'SAMICH'! At the time we thought we were getting away with something. Actually we weren't. Somehow, Mom knew, and she was teaching at RJHS! Wonder how she found out? Wonder why we were made to continue to drink milk? Wonder how Mom knew we drank our milk when we got home in the evenings? - DUH!!!!!
